  • A member of the Citadel faculty in 1862, Coffin served as Adjutant of the Battalion of State Cadets during the Battle of Tulifinney Creek, December 7-9, 1864.  Coffin was severely wounded on December 7, taking a ball shot to the head.
  • Post War, Coffin was recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as "one of the best engineers of his time."  He designed the structural features of numerous bridges and buildings across the US, including notable buildings in Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA, Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, Madison, Wisconsin and New York, NY.  
  • In 1896, Coffin moved to New York to take charge of the engineering work for nationally prominent architect George B. Post, on such landmark buildings as the New York Stock Exchange, the St Paul Building, City College of New York (CCNY) and, Prudential Life Insurance Building.
